Halo Trust Commends Cambodian Mine Action Authority’s Effective Leadership in Demining Efforts
PHNOM PENH, July 26, 2024 — The Halo Trust has lauded the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) for its robust leadership and coordination in mine clearance operations throughout Cambodia.
The commendation came during a farewell meeting on July 25, between Mr. Miles Hawthorn, outgoing Director of Halo Trust in Cambodia, and Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice President of CMAA.
Mr. Hawthorn expressed gratitude for CMAA’s enduring support, partnership, and collaboration which significantly contributed to Halo Trust’s 30-year mission in Cambodia. Under this partnership, substantial progress has been made in clearing mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), thereby bolstering community safety and national development.
Ly Thuch, in response, extended profound thanks to Halo Trust for its pivotal role since 1991 in clearing over 511 square kilometers of mine-contaminated land. Moreover, over 1.5 million rounds of small arms ammunition were safely disposed of.
The Senior Minister also acknowledged the significant support from international partners including Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Ireland, and the HDR&D programme. He gave a special mention to the deminers who have risked their lives to clear mines, thereby safeguarding the Cambodian populace.
Mr. Tobias Wehitt will succeed Mr. Hawthorn as the Director of Halo Trust in Cambodia, continuing the vital work of mine clearance and community rehabilitation.
